Letter to the Editor – Walkerton Herald Times

It is September and the 2010 soccer season has come to a close for another year. As President of Walkerton Minor Soccer, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our many great volunteers – executive members, coaches, referees and parents who have helped to make this another successful year for Walkerton Minor Soccer! Thank you to our many sponsors who helped to provide new jerseys and equipment for our players.

I would also like to thank our soccer players for having fun, making new friends, and enjoying some exercise outside this summer. All of our teams performed great; we had almost 450 children and young adults registered for soccer this summer – this is an all time high for Walkerton Minor Soccer!

Our teams brought home many medals in their year end tournaments with Walkerton Wightman Red bringing home gold in the B division and Walkerton Wightman Green was awarded the silver medal in the A division for U8. OPG White won the gold medals in the B division with OPG Green winning silver in the A division for U10. U12 Girls Energizer Gold, U14 Girls Fastline Striping Green, U14 Boys Godfather’s Red and U16 Boys Pellow Pharmasave Burgundy all won the bronze medals at the Lakeshore World Cup with both U20 teams, U20 Girls Jim MacArthur Windows and Doors Blue and U20 Boys Green coming home with silver medals from the Lakeshore tournament. Walkerton will be hosting the year end SWRSL cup for the U17 Girls L5 team on Sunday, September 12th at Brant Central School.

Walkerton Minor Soccer and Saugeen Futsal League was successful joining together last fall/winter for the winter junior futsal season. Last year was the first year for this joint venture with almost 80 children registering. This will be offered once again, watch our website – www.walkertonsoccer.ca for details.

A special “thank you” to our hard working coaches will be held on Sunday, September 12th at Brant Central School. This will be an opportunity for all to appreciate their coaches and play some fun group soccer games and skills competitions. We will be having a fund raising bbq for Walkerton Fields in conjunction with Aid for Nicaragua. There will be an opportunity to purchase Walkerton Field fundraising clothing as well.

Thanks to our hard working executive – Mike Merchant-Vice President, Meridith White-Secretary/Ref Coordinator, Ruth Weber-Registrar, Paul Charette-Coach Coordinator, Richard Osborne-Lakeshore Representative, Dave Johnson-Publicity Coordinator/webmaster, and John Edgington-Equipment Coordinator for their hard work and countless hours of dedication to the children of our community.

The Walkerton Minor Soccer Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Monday, September 27th at 7:00 pm at Sacred Heart High School in Walkerton – come out and run for an executive position or just join our team! This is a great opportunity for the community to come out and provide input to the committee and get involved. I hope to see lots of people out this year.
